CNC Machine Shop Manager
Location: Stroud
Salary: £55,000 – £60,000
Hours: Monday to Thursday 8:00am – 4:30pm, Friday 8:00am – 1:30pm
Working Pattern: On-site
Bonus: Performance-related incentive (to be agreed)
The Company
A leading advanced engineering manufacturer is looking to appoint an experienced Machine Shop Manager to lead a high-performing CNC machining operation. The Role
Reporting into senior leadership, you will take full responsibility for a busy machining facility operating across multiple shifts. You’ll oversee production, engineering support functions, and team performance, while driving improvements in productivity, quality, and overall manufacturing efficiency.
This is a hands-on leadership role requiring strong technical expertise, excellent people management skills, and the ability to balance day-to-day operational demands with longer-term strategic goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the daily operations of a large CNC machining department, including multi-axis machine tools
- Manage, develop, and support supervisors, engineers, and shop floor personnel
- Ensure production targets are delivered safely, efficiently, and on time
- Drive improvements in machine utilisation, workflow, and operational performance
- Collaborate with manufacturing engineering to optimise machining methods and tooling strategies
- Monitor KPIs including output, downtime, labour utilisation, and production costs
- Support capacity planning and production scheduling
- Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for manufacturing issues
- Support the introduction of new equipment, technologies, and processes
- Maintain high standards of quality, housekeeping, and organisation
- Assist with recruitment, training, mentoring, and workforce development
- Conduct performance reviews and manage employee development plans
- Work cross-functionally with Planning, Quality, Purchasing, and Engineering teams
- Report on operational performance to senior management
The Candidate
- Apprentice-trained or qualified in mechanical/manufacturing engineering
- Proven experience managing CNC machining operations within precision or advanced manufacturing
- Strong technical knowledge of milling, turning, and EDM processes
- Experience leading teams in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
- Solid understanding of production planning, KPIs, and continuous improvement methodologies
- Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills
- Commercially aware, with the ability to balance quality, cost, and delivery
- Proactive problem solver with a hands-on management approach
- Comfortable using ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Office
