Job Title: Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer

Purpose of the Role
We are looking for a Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer to play a key role in ensuring the reliability, safety, and performance of all site assets. You will take ownership of both proactive and reactive maintenance across electrical, mechanical, and utilities systems. Working closely with production, quality, and safety teams, you’ll drive continuous improvement, optimise asset performance, and uphold the highest standards of food safety and compliance.
Main Responsibilities
- Carry out a wide range of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic maintenance tasks across all site equipment and utilities.
- Lead fault diagnosis, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis to maintain long-term reliability.
- Support and mentor other engineers to develop technical expertise within the team.
- Deliver planned preventative maintenance (PPM) schedules to maximise uptime.
- Respond quickly to breakdowns (onsite and on-call), ensuring minimal production disruption.
- Document all maintenance activities accurately to maintain traceability and compliance.
- Ensure all work follows Health & Safety, Food Safety, and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards.
- Stay up-to-date with legislation including PUWER, LOLER, and HACCP principles.
- Act as the maintenance representative on the site Health & Safety team, providing technical guidance on engineering risk assessments and corrective actions.
- Analyse equipment performance data to identify recurring issues and develop improvement plans.
- Drive energy efficiency, waste reduction, and cost-saving initiatives.
- Contribute to capital projects, including equipment upgrades and new installations.
- Design, fabricate, and machine bespoke components, frames, and fixtures where required.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organised workshop environment.
- Manage spare parts inventory and ensure critical spares are available and accurately recorded.
- Supervise and coordinate external contractors, ensuring compliance with site rules, insurance, and H&S documentation (RAMS, permits, etc.).
- Assist in planning and executing engineering projects, installations, and shutdown works.
- Review contractor performance to ensure standards meet company expectations.
- Work closely with Production, Quality, and Technical teams to align maintenance activities with operational needs.
- Provide clear technical feedback and recommendations to management on equipment condition and improvement opportunities.
- Always wear appropriate PPE and follow company safety protocols and permit systems.
- Promote a culture of safety and accountability throughout the engineering and production teams.
Knowledge, Experience, and Skills Required
Essential:
- Previous experience as a multi-skilled engineer with strong electrical and mechanical capabilities (apprenticeship or equivalent).
- Experience within the food or FMCG manufacturing industry.
- Proficient in PLC fault-finding, motor control systems, and automated process equipment.
- Strong understanding of H&S legislation, Food Safety standards, and risk assessment processes.
Desirable:
- ONC/HNC or higher qualification in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience with utilities systems (steam, compressed air, refrigeration, water).
- Welding, fabrication, and machining experience.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing, TPM, or reliability-centred maintenance principles.
Package
- £35,000 - £45,000 depending on experience
- Day role with flexible hours, 40-hour week
- Pension up to 8% matched
- 25 days annual leave + bank holidays (increases with service up to 28 days)
- Bonus up to 5% paid in January, pro-rated if joining later
- Overtime paid at x1.5
